How to Source Shower Filters from China: From First Search to First Shipment

Say you run a small home goods brand and you have decided to add a shower filter. You have a spreadsheet of Alibaba quotes and a few trade fair contacts, and the prices are all over the place. You can’t tell which suppliers actually make the product, what to check when samples arrive, or when the balance is due. That is where most first-time buyers start. Below is how to source shower filters from China, following one order through seven steps.

This guide covers the process. What makes a supplier good or weak (product range, filter media, documents, after-sales) is in our guide to choosing a shower filter supplier.

Step 1: Write your brief before you contact anyone

If your first message says “please send price list”, you get a price list for whatever the factory wants to sell. Write half a page first:

  • Product format: an inline filter between the arm and the shower head, or a handheld filtered shower.
  • Sales channel: Amazon, your own store, retail, salons, hotels or wholesale.
  • Quantity: the first order and a rough yearly number.
  • Customization: logo, packaging, manual, cartridge configuration, color or finish, or none.
  • Target market: it decides which documents and labels you need.

The first four items are what Jinko asks for before quoting: the product, your sales channel, the quantity and whether you want customization. Most factories ask the same, so ready answers save a round of emails. If you are still deciding what to sell, start with our guide to launching a shower filter brand.

Step 2: Where to find shower filter factories

Channel Good for Watch out for
B2B platforms (Alibaba, Global Sources, Made-in-China) A long supplier list quickly, with prices and photos Factories and traders look alike, and you verify everything yourself
Trade fairs Handling samples, asking about cartridge options, meeting the people who will run your order Travel cost; a booth tells you about sales, not the production line
Google search Factory sites that show the product line, materials and past projects Polished sites are cheap to build; check the details match the platform listings
Referrals Suppliers that other brands have already shipped with Another brand’s volume may not match yours

The Canton Fair is held in Guangzhou in spring and autumn and covers almost every consumer category. Aquatech China is held in Shanghai, usually in the autumn, and focuses on water treatment, so most exhibitors work with filters and filter media. Check each fair’s official schedule before you book travel.

A fair is the fastest way to compare products side by side: open the housing, feel the thread, see how the cartridge seats and ask what is inside. Jinko has exhibited at Aquatech China, and the photo below is from our booth.

One factory often appears under several names across platforms, so it helps to know where production clusters. Our overview of shower filter manufacturers in China covers that.

Step 3: Screen the factory and confirm who makes the product

A trading company is not automatically a bad choice, but you should know which one you are dealing with, because it changes who controls quality. The simplest question is which steps they do in-house. Jinko, for example, assembles its shower filters and produces its own filter cartridges in Foshan Shunde, Guangdong. A clear answer like that can be checked.

For each supplier on your shortlist, ask for:

  • A business license and export registration in the company name you will pay.
  • A live video walk through the assembly line, cartridge area and inspection area.
  • A product line that is mostly shower filters, not everything from phone cases to pet bowls.
  • Certificates and test documents that name the model you are buying, not a different model or a parent company.
  • One or two customers you can contact, if they agree.

Many buyers visit in person or hire a third-party auditor before a first order. That costs extra, so ask early whether the supplier accepts visits or audits.

Warning signs: no live video call, catalog-only product photos, certificates for a different model, and a request for full payment before anything is made. The full supplier evaluation criteria are in our separate guide.

Step 4: Send an RFQ that gets comparable quotes

Your quotes differ partly because each supplier guessed at a different product. A request for quotation (RFQ) that specifies the product removes most of that noise. Include:

  • The model number or a reference photo
  • The cartridge configuration you want
  • Quantity, in one batch or several
  • Logo, packaging and manual requirements
  • The target market and the documents you need
  • Required delivery date
  • The trade term you want quoted (see Step 6)
  • A target price, if you have one

Line the replies up on the same basis before you compare price. Check whether the price includes the cartridge and retail packaging, whether the minimum applies per model or per order, and whether the sample fee is credited against the order. A slow or vague reply is a signal in itself.

Jinko’s MOQ starts from 1,000 units and is flexible by model and customization; mixing models in one order is not usually possible. Our shower filter MOQ guide explains how minimums work, and our OEM shower filter manufacturing page lists the models and customization options.

Step 5: Test samples before you place a production order

Never go from a quote straight to a production order. Install each sample on a real shower and check:

  • The G1/2″ thread fits your shower arm and shower head without an adapter.
  • Neither connection leaks after installation and a few minutes of use.
  • Flow is acceptable across normal household pressure. Jinko’s shower filters are rated for 0.1 to 0.5 MPa.
  • The cartridge comes out and goes back in easily, since your customer will do this every few months.
  • Finish, logo, color, box and manual match what you asked for.

A sample does not prove filtration performance. Claims about what a filter removes need a test report for that exact model and cartridge.

At Jinko, a sample of an existing model takes 2 to 3 days and a customized sample 5 to 7 days. Whether a sample is charged depends on the request, and the fee can be credited against your order. Put every change in writing, and once you approve, keep one sample and ask the factory to keep one for comparison with production. Our sample approval checklist goes through this in detail.

Step 6: Agree payment terms and the Incoterm in writing

A common structure for a first order is a 30% deposit by bank transfer (T/T) and 70% before shipment. Some buyers release the balance only after inspection passes. Terms vary by supplier, so ask what yours offers. Either way, don’t pay 100% upfront on a first order, pay only to a company account in the supplier’s registered name, and make sure the contract or proforma invoice states each amount and when it is due.

The trade term needs the same care. Incoterms are published by the International Chamber of Commerce; the current edition is Incoterms 2020, with 11 rules that set where delivery happens and who pays which costs and carries which risk. Agree the term before you compare prices, because EXW and FOB prices are not comparable. FOB is a common choice for first-time importers because the supplier handles export clearance and you control the sea freight.

Jinko’s mass production takes 20 days. With any factory, ask when the clock starts: at the deposit, at sample approval or when materials arrive. Our guide to private label lead times shows how the stages add up.

Step 7: Inspect the goods before you pay the balance

Ask the factory for its outgoing inspection record first. Before shipment, Jinko checks every order for leaks, appearance, pressure resistance and packaging. The record shows what was tested and gives you a baseline if a problem appears later.

On your side, you can:

  • Ask for photos and video of finished, packed goods with your carton marks visible.
  • Hire a third-party inspector for a pre-shipment inspection. AQL sampling is the usual way to choose how many units to check.
  • Release the balance after the inspection report is clean, if that is what your contract says.

Agree the warranty before shipment, too. Jinko’s shower filters carry a one-year warranty from the shipping date, and quality problems confirmed with photos or video are covered with replacement products. For what an inspector should check and how AQL sampling works, read our shower filter quality inspection guide.

Shipping and customs: what to arrange before the goods leave

Sea freight suits most full orders; air suits samples and urgent top-ups. On a FOB order your own forwarder books the shipment, so choose one before production ends.

If you import into the United States

U.S. Customs and Border Protection publishes tips for new importers. For a first shipment:

  • The importer of record needs an importer number. That is usually your IRS business number, or you can request one from CBP with Form 5106.
  • Customs brokers are licensed by CBP, but the importer of record is still responsible for the accuracy of the entry and for paying duties.
  • Ocean cargo bound for the U.S. needs an Importer Security Filing (ISF, often called 10+2). Confirm with your broker or forwarder who files it and when.
  • Ask your broker to confirm the HTS code for your exact model. CBP’s CROSS database lists past classification rulings for similar products.
  • Duty rates and additional tariffs change. Get the current figure from your broker before you set a retail price.

Other markets

The UAE, Saudi Arabia, the UK, France and other markets each have their own rules for documents and labelling. Ask a local customs broker before you order, not after the goods arrive.

Basic documents for any destination are the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Jinko can provide CE and RoHS documentation; confirm any other documents with your broker. Landed cost is the product price plus freight, duties, customs brokerage and insurance. Compare that total against your margin, not the unit price.

Common mistakes first-time buyers make

  • Comparing prices before the specs match: a cheaper quote often leaves out the cartridge, box or logo.
  • Skipping the sample: thread fit and leaks are cheap to find on one unit and expensive on a full order.
  • Paying everything upfront: you have no recourse if inspection finds a problem.
  • Letting the cartridge change after the sample: write the configuration into the order and check it at inspection.
  • Not defining when lead time starts: “20 days” means little without a start event.
  • Forgetting refills: ask how long the supplier will keep making your replacement cartridge.
  • Judging safety by country of origin: safety depends on the certificates and test documents for that model, not on where it was made.

A realistic first-order timeline

The table shows how to source shower filters from China on a calendar, from brief to shipment.

Week What happens
Weeks 1 to 2 Write your brief, send RFQs, narrow the list to 3 to 5 suppliers
Weeks 2 to 3 Live video tours, document checks, sample requests
Weeks 3 to 4 Samples arrive and you test them (at Jinko, 2 to 3 days for an existing model or 5 to 7 for a customized one, plus courier time)
Weeks 4 to 5 Agree payment terms and the Incoterm, sign the order, pay the deposit
Next 3 weeks or so Mass production (20 days at Jinko; other factories vary)
Before shipment Factory inspection record, your own inspection, balance payment
After shipment Sea or air freight; transit time varies by route, so confirm it with your forwarder

This is a planning example, not a promise. Public holidays in China and your own market can move dates, so ask about holiday schedules when you order.

If Jinko is on your shortlist, send us the model you are considering, your sales channel, the quantity and any customization, and we will come back with a quote.
