OEM vs ODM vs Private Label: Which Model Fits Your Shower Filter Brand?

OEM vs ODM vs private label comes down to who owns the design. With OEM, the factory builds your design. With ODM, you start from the factory’s design and change parts of it. With private label, you take a finished factory model and sell it under your brand, usually with your own packaging. White label is the same as private label, except the product is not exclusive to you.

Most guides explain these terms with clothing or cosmetics. This one uses shower filters, because the details that matter here are different: the housing, the filter cartridge, the connection thread, and who can keep supplying replacement cartridges after launch. At the end you will find a simple way to decide where your brand should start.

OEM vs ODM vs private label at a glance

OEM ODM Private label White label
Who designs the product You The factory, you adjust it The factory The factory
Who owns the design You, if your contract says so Usually the factory The factory The factory
What you change Housing, structure, cartridge, everything Color, surface finish, cartridge formula, packaging Logo, packaging, manual Logo or label only
Upfront cost Highest (tooling and testing) Medium Low Lowest
Time to first shipment Longest Medium Short Shortest
Exclusive to your brand Yes Depends on the agreement Usually, through your packaging and formula No

If you want speed and low risk, private label is the usual first step. If you need a product your competitors cannot buy, you move toward ODM and then OEM.

OEM vs ODM: who designs the product

OEM: the factory builds your design

In an OEM project you bring the design: drawings, a 3D file, or a sample you already sell. The factory makes tooling for it and produces it to your specification. This is the right route when you already have a housing shape or internal structure that is yours, and you want nobody else to sell it.

OEM takes the most time and money, because new tooling has to be made and the first parts have to be checked for fit, leaks and pressure before mass production. Ask the factory early who will own the molds once you have paid for them, and put the answer in the contract.

ODM: you start from the factory’s design

In an ODM project you pick a model the factory already makes and change what you need. For a shower filter that usually means the color, the surface finish, the cartridge formula and the packaging. The housing tooling already exists, so you skip the slowest and most expensive part of development.

Some articles describe ODM as “full customization”. It is the opposite: the design belongs to the factory, and you are adapting it. That is why ODM is faster than OEM, and also why you should ask whether the factory will sell the same base model to other brands.

At Jinko, ODM development follows an IPD process, so changes to an existing model go through defined design, sample and test stages before mass production.

Private label vs white label

Both use a finished product the factory already makes. The difference is exclusivity.

  • White label: a standard product with a plain label. The same item may be sold by several brands, so you compete mostly on price.
  • Private label: the product is made for your brand, with your logo, packaging and manual, and often a cartridge or scent choice that is specific to you. You still use the factory’s housing, but buyers see a product that belongs to your brand.

For a beauty or lifestyle brand, white label is a quick way to test demand. A private label shower filter is where you start building something people associate with your name.

What you can customize at each level (shower filter example)

If you are planning a custom shower filter, this is how customization works on Jinko’s current models. Logo, packaging and the user manual are standard services. Cartridge formula, color and surface finish are evaluated case by case for each order.

What you can change Options Private label ODM OEM
Logo Laser engraving, silk screen printing, hot stamping Yes Yes Yes
Packaging Mailer box, gift box Yes Yes Yes
User manual Your brand, your language Yes Yes Yes
Color and surface finish Spray paint with UV coating, electroplating, colored injection molding No Yes, evaluated per model Yes
Cartridge formula PP cotton, calcium sulfite, carbon block, carbon fiber, copper-zinc (KDF-type) media, vitamin C Choose from existing options Yes, evaluated per order Yes
Vitamin C scent and color Adjusted to your brand Choose from existing options Yes, evaluated per order Yes
Housing shape and structure New design No No Yes

Not every option fits every model. Jinko’s JK-S3, a clip-in model with side connections that makes cartridge changes easy, supports logo, packaging, manual and cartridge configuration. The JK-S4 (diamond-cut housing) and JK-S6 (aluminum housing for the premium segment) also support color and surface finish changes.

Jinko can also adjust a cartridge formula to the water in your target market: the water is analyzed first, then the media and formula are chosen and tested. If you are not sure which media fits your market, our KDF vs vitamin C shower filter guide explains the trade-offs.

Timeline and cost: what changes between models

The further you go from a finished model, the more time you add before the first shipment. These are Jinko’s current shower filter lead times:

  • Sample of an existing model: 2 to 3 days
  • Customized sample: 5 to 7 days
  • Mass production after sample approval: 20 days

Private label orders mostly follow this timeline, because only the logo, packaging and manual change. ODM orders add time for color, finish or formula approval. OEM orders add tooling and structural testing on top, so plan for a longer schedule and ask the factory for a written timeline before you commit.

Sample fees depend on the request, and the fee can be credited against your order. The minimum order for Jinko’s shower filters starts from 1,000 units and can be adjusted depending on the model and how much you customize. Orders are normally placed per model rather than mixed, although this can be discussed case by case. See our shower filter MOQ guide for how to plan it. The private label sample approval guide shows what to check when your sample arrives.

Who owns the design, molds and formula

Ownership is easy to overlook on a first order. Before you sign, make sure you know the answer to each of these:

  • Design: in OEM, the design is yours. In ODM and private label, the base design stays with the factory.
  • Molds: in OEM, you usually pay for tooling. Whether you own the molds, and whether they can be moved to another factory, depends on the contract.
  • Exclusivity: in ODM and private label, exclusivity is something you negotiate. It may apply to a color, a finish, a formula, a market or a time period.
  • Replacement cartridges: your customers will need new cartridges every 3 to 6 months. Confirm that the factory will keep producing the same cartridge for your model, and in which packaging. On Jinko’s range, the S4 and S6 share the same cartridge, while the S3 uses its own.

Replacement cartridges bring customers back every few months, so treat them as part of the product. Our shower filter replacement guide explains how replacement intervals are set.

How to choose: a simple path for a new shower filter brand

  1. Testing the market: start with private label. Pick an existing model, add your logo, your packaging and your manual. You get to market quickly with the lowest risk.
  2. Building a recognizable product: move to ODM. Change the color or surface finish, choose a vitamin C formula with your own scent (see how to plan a custom scented shower filter line), and design a gift box that matches the rest of your range.
  3. Owning the product: go OEM when you have a housing shape or structure you want to protect, and the sales volume to justify tooling.

Here is how that can look in practice. A lifestyle brand in Dubai wants a vitamin C shower filter for its self-care line. For the first order it chooses an existing model under private label, with its logo and a gift box. Once the product sells, the second order moves to ODM: a custom color and finish, and a vitamin C cartridge with the brand’s own scent. The brand only considers OEM once it has repeat orders and a design it wants to keep for itself. For more on selling in the region, see our guide to the shower filter market in the Middle East.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • What is the minimum order for each model, and does it change with the level of customization?
  • How long do an existing sample, a custom sample and mass production take?
  • Is the sample fee credited against the order?
  • Which items are standard (logo, packaging, manual) and which need separate evaluation (color, finish, cartridge)?
  • Who owns the molds and the design, and can the base model be sold to other brands?
  • Will the same replacement cartridge be available for as long as you sell the product?
  • Which documents come with the product? Jinko’s shower filters come with CE and RoHS documentation.
  • What checks are done before shipment? At Jinko, orders are checked for leaks, pressure resistance, appearance and packaging before shipment.
