Most shower filter cartridges are replaced every 3 to 6 months. That is a useful reminder, but it is not a universal expiry date. A cartridge used by one person in a building with clean plumbing may last longer than the same cartridge in a busy family bathroom with old pipes and visible sediment.
Check the instructions for your exact cartridge first. If the manufacturer gives a tested service cycle, use it. When model-specific data are unavailable, treat 3 to 6 months as a provisional range and pay attention to water use, changes in flow and the condition of the filter assembly.

Why the replacement interval varies
A shower filter does not wear out simply because a date arrives. Its working life depends on the amount of water that passes through the cartridge and what that water carries.
Water use is the easiest part to estimate. Measure the shower flow, multiply it by the usual shower time, then multiply that figure by the number of showers taken each day. If the cartridge has a verified capacity, divide that capacity by the daily volume. This gives you a rough replacement date.
Daily water use = measured flow x shower time x showers per day
Estimated service days = verified cartridge capacity / daily water use
The calculation is only useful when the capacity belongs to the exact cartridge. It can also overstate service life if the test water contained less disinfectant or sediment than the water in the home.
Sediment creates a different problem. Rust, sand and debris from older pipes can collect on a screen or PP layer and restrict the flow before the chemical media are exhausted. A gradual pressure drop after a period of normal use often points to physical blockage.
Water chemistry matters too. Free chlorine and chloramine are different disinfectants. The U.S. EPA explains how chloramines are used in drinking water systems, and a cartridge sold for a chloramine market needs evidence that covers chloramine rather than free chlorine alone. NSF also states that NSF/ANSI 177 certification for shower filters concerns free available chlorine reduction. It is not a blanket certificate for hardness, heavy metals or every other claim that may appear in a product description.
The name of the media does not settle the lifespan question either. Two cartridges containing KDF can have different capacities because the media weight and flow path are different. The same applies to calcium sulfite, activated carbon and Vitamin C. What the common warning signs really mean

Skin feel and hair texture are poor stand-alone indicators. They can change with humidity, shampoo, water temperature and hardness. Normal water pressure is not proof that the chemical media are still reducing chlorine either. Water can continue to pass through a cartridge after the media have lost much of their useful capacity.

Hard water can make a working filter look ineffective
Hard water mainly contains dissolved calcium and magnesium. These minerals can leave white scale on a showerhead and react with soap. The U.S. Geological Survey’s explanation of water hardness is useful here because it separates hardness from disinfectants such as chlorine.
A standard shower filter does not necessarily soften water. Scale may therefore remain even while the cartridge is still doing the job it was designed for. If the buying requirement is chlorine reduction, ask for evidence related to chlorine. If the main complaint is hard-water scale, the buyer may need a different treatment method.
How to replace a shower filter cartridge
- Turn off the shower and let the housing drain.
- Open the housing as shown in the instructions for that model.
- Remove the used cartridge, then check the housing, gasket and O-ring.
- Insert the correct replacement cartridge in the required direction.
- Reassemble the housing, flush the new cartridge for the stated time and check for leaks.
Do not rinse and reuse chemical media unless the instructions for that exact model permit it. A washable sediment screen may be reusable, but rinsing does not restore activated carbon, KDF, calcium sulfite or Vitamin C after the media have reached their working capacity.

What brands and importers should settle before ordering refills
For importers, brands and distributors, the replacement interval affects the user manual, refill inventory and repeat orders. It also shapes the claim printed on the box. A vague “lasts up to six months” statement may be easy to sell, but it creates trouble when nobody can explain which cartridge was tested or how the figure was reached.
Before approving a month or gallon claim, ask for the exact cartridge model and the substance measured during testing. Check the inlet concentration, flow, temperature, total treated volume and the result used to mark the end of the service cycle. It also matters whether the complete cartridge was tested or the supplier is relying on data from loose media.
The refill also needs a part number, a clear compatibility statement and instructions that match the housing. Cartridge direction, seal dimensions and batch checks should be settled before production, not after customers start asking which refill to buy.

The certificate states that the manufacturer must complete the EU Declaration of Conformity and meet other applicable EU directives before using the CE marking. It also says the evaluation covers one sample, not the entire production, so confirm that the document set matches the model in your order.
